a portfolio site for the New York City journalist

Emma Graves Fitzsimmons is a freelance journalist based in New York City. Prior to moving to New York in the summer of 2011, Emma worked as a reporter in Chicago for five years at The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune.

In Chicago, Emma reported from President Obama’s election night victory party in Grant Park and followed Rahm Emanuel on the campaign trail as he ran for mayor. She watched Rod Blagojevich, the ousted former governor of Illinois, testify on the stand in his federal corruption trial and attended an auction to sell off Mr. Blagojevich’s personal items alongside two Elvis impersonators.

Emma has also reported on the battle over collective bargaining rights in the Midwest, the loss of factory jobs in the region, and Chicago’s plan to transform public housing. Her favorite assignment was a trip to Indianapolis for the opening of a museum to honor the author Kurt Vonnegut in his hometown.
